Grass-fed beef is more expensive than grain-fed beef for a number of reasons, including:

  • Time: It can take up to a year longer to raise grass-fed cattle to processing weight, which increases labor and food costs for farmers.
  • Size: Grass-fed cows are usually smaller than grain-fed cows, so they produce less meat.
  • Land: Grass-fed cattle require more land than grain-fed cattle.
  • Infrastructure: Grass-fed farms are often small, independent producers with smaller infrastructure than grain-fed operations.

Most people think they are eating grass why would this be more? With grain-finished beef they are ready to slaughter in 14-16 months. Grass-finished on the other hand, takes approximately 32-34 months. Our cattle are not just eating whatever grows in their paddocks we control it. We sow _______________________________________________________________ in each paddock and change this based on the season. The animals rotate paddocks to prevent over grazing. It takes approximately 4.5 acres per calf/cow pair to accommodate their nutritional needs.
